PL/ Most Poniatowskiego
Most Poniatowskiego to jeden z najbardziej rozpoznawalnych i malowniczych mostów Warszawy. Łączy lewobrzeżne Śródmieście z prawobrzeżną Pragą-Południe, stanowiąc zarówno ważny element infrastruktury, jak i architektoniczną wizytówkę stolicy. Jego pełna nazwa – Most księcia Józefa Poniatowskiego – upamiętnia wybitnego polskiego dowódcę i bohatera narodowego.
W 1944 roku, podczas odwrotu wojsk niemieckich, most został wysadzony.
Most Poniatowskiego to więcej niż konstrukcja – to symboliczne miejsce spotkań, wspomnień i połączenia dwóch Warszaw.
The Poniatowski Bridge is one of Warsaw’s most iconic and picturesque structures. It connects the Śródmieście district on the left bank of the Vistula with Praga-Południe on the right, serving not only as a vital part of the city’s infrastructure but also as an architectural landmark. Its full name — Prince Józef Poniatowski Bridge — honors a distinguished Polish military leader and national hero.
Opened in 1914, after nearly a decade of planning and construction, it was one of the first modern bridges in Warsaw. Designed to accommodate pedestrians, cars, and trams, it was considered innovative for its time, combining steel, concrete, and bold aesthetics. Initially, under Russian rule, it bore the name of Tsar Nicholas II, before being renamed following Poland’s independence.
The bridge’s most distinctive features are its neo-Renaissance towers and gatehouses, richly decorated and styled after historical architecture. Originally designed as defensive structures by order of the Russian authorities, today they give the bridge an almost palatial appearance, making it not just a transit route, but a masterpiece of engineering.
In 1944, retreating German forces blew up the bridge. Despite severe damage, it was faithfully reconstructed by 1946, preserving its original form. Today, the Poniatowski Bridge once again serves as a key transport route, while maintaining its historical and visual identity.
The bridge now features two roadways, tram tracks, and walkways for pedestrians and cyclists. Every day, thousands of Warsaw residents and tourists cross it — linking not only the two banks of the Vistula but also the past with the present.
Beneath the structure, nestled within its arches, lies Galeria Arkada — a retail and cultural passage with a unique character. Its brick interiors house cafes, shops, and art galleries, breathing new life into the space beneath the bridge. It stands as an example of successful urban revitalization, where infrastructure supports transport, culture, and community alike.
The Poniatowski Bridge is more than just a crossing — it is a meeting place, a memory, and a symbolic link between the old and new Warsaw. On one side, the National Stadium, on the other — the city’s skyline. And at the center of it all: the timeless silhouette of a bridge that has defined the rhythm of the capital for over a century.
