To jeden z ostatnich takich zwyczajów zachowanych w Europie.

Ostrów Tumski is the oldest and most historic part of Wrocław – the place where the city’s history began. As early as the 10th century, a fortified settlement stood here, guarding a crossing over the Odra River. In the year 1000, the establishment of the Wrocław bishopric made the island one of the most important religious centers in Silesia. For centuries, Ostrów Tumski served as the spiritual and administrative heart of the region.

The most recognizable landmark of the island is the Gothic Cathedral of St. John the Baptist, built between the 13th and 15th centuries on the foundations of earlier churches. Its soaring towers, visible from many parts of the city, have become a defining element of Wrocław’s skyline. Ostrów Tumski is also home to other valuable monuments, including the Church of St. Giles, regarded as the oldest preserved church in the city.

The unique atmosphere of the island is created by historic gas street lamps, which are still lit by hand every evening by a lamplighter. This tradition is one of the last of its kind in Europe.
